Completely agree. In my practice I have found many normal BMI patients with High % of body fat (>30% measured by electrical impedance) with or without metabolic problems yet. Unfortunately I can only treat them as “esthetic” weight loss. I understand that these patients are well on their way to metabolic problems and I decided to treat them as that. We need something more than just the BMI to classify these patients, if at all.

Thank you so much for your words about the FDA position on obesity treatment. Seening so much advocacy gives us practitioners in this field some hope. It relieves some of the frustration. We don’t know what to tell our patients any more. At least not us, the practitioners that do follow aproved guidelines for the treatment of obesity and use FDA aproved drugs. Patients are left to the mercy of dubiuos nutraceuticals and whatever they are sold out in other types of centers.

Morgan the FDA is so afraid of making a phen phen mistake that they are taking it out on these obesity drug companies.The best way to address the FDA is to get approval in Europe which seems to be a more reasonable and fair route. The bigger story here is the leaking of FDA briefing doc’s so hedge funds and others could naked short biotechs(arna 38 mil shorted,vvus 30mil shorted) into oblivion. Beyond that the bias of the FDA for big pharma with clout is very evident and needs to be addressed.

Sorry I missed your chat. I think the Food Pyramid is a bad way to describe how to eat healthy food. The way it looks, the highest point, the zenith, what we aspire to, is chocolate/candy/ice cream etc. When you look at the pyramid, it doesn’t tell you how to eat, but rather emotionally what’s good as you get to the good stuff on top. Can we re-do this pyramid and maybe not have a pyramid at all?
