The California Public Interest Group Education Fund has issued a report, Apples to Twinkes: Comparing Federal Subsidies of Fresh Produce
and Junk Food. The report estimates that, between, 1995 and 2010, $16.9 billion in tax dollars subsidized four common food additives – corn syrup, corn starch, high fructose corn syrup, and soy oils compared to only $262 million since 1995 subsidizing apples, the only significant subsidy for fresh fruits or vegetables.
